Congratulations on Petra becoming one of the New 7 Wonders of the World. Chosen from among a number of extremely valid candidates, Petra was announced second behind the Great Wall of China.

If you've ever visited Petra, you'll realize immediately that this win is completely valid. If you've never been to Petra—especially if you live in Jordan—I suggest you reevaluate your priorities.

EDIT: Be sure to ready Sha3teely's post on the subject. He does a good job of reviewing some of the issues that Jordan needs to address once the celebrating dies down.

Being a part of this competition has put Jordan on the tourist map. But can Jordan's infrustructure and culture handle a larger influx of tourists? After all, Jordan does an OK job with tourism, but if we're going to rely on it as a major source of income, we need to evaluate some of the major areas that are lacking.

Greetings Dave,
I came across your blog through an old issue of JO. I'm with a group of teachers from California who are traveling with professors from the University of California - Santa Barbara. Our purpose is to learn more about the Middle East region and to return home with another perspective other than what the media provides. We were in Petra the night of DJ Tiesto and we were dumbfounded at the cost of tickets (around $220). I've enjoyed your blog entries, as they are in line with my own personal interest of being culturally/politically aware of educational/political issues. Some of the teachers are also keeping blogs. A very serious blog (like yours) is http://lysainthemiddeleast.blogspot.com
